A Very Martial Christmas
Remember the major news themes that began to emerge on around the third day of Seattle events? One was really great. It was focussed on the fact that third-world delegates were breaking ranks with the rest of the WTO and giving press conferences stating that the whole WTO was a sham ... that there was no democracy or transparency in the process. These delegates basically said that the protesters on the streets, and not the trade ministers inside, were right. ... we cheered before going off to do interviews or cover events outside the jail.
Another theme that was saturating the local broadcast coverage, was that it was getting nice and safe to come downtown and go SHOPPING. It was the lead up to the "holiday season" the voices reminded us and so we should all feel good in knowing that Seattle was open for business. There was also an obvious cooperation from local authorities and from the National Guard in the production of news spots about shopping.
So, for our final installment for the video broadcast known as "Showdown in Seattle," we at Whispered Media decided to juxtapose some of this news footage with real footage that we had. We also threw in some holiday music and what emerged was a nice little 2-minute send-up that we have since called - A Very Martial Christmas.
This idea (of ironically using the christmas music and police-state imagery) was then later lifted and employed by the makers of the recent drama - "Battle in Seattle." Their segments with the tune, "White Christmas," mirror our segment with the Dance of the Sugar Plum Ferries. These portions of their film - although derivative - are still enjoyable.
So, I'm trying to link to it here ... for you to enjoy ... the original ...
