Like any kind of musical instrument, you should consider some factors to choose the right ukulele for your needs. Someone will see the brand and assume that the best ukulele brands are the exact product for them. However, there are different sizes, woods, and types of ukuleles as well. In this post, I will try to help you find out your own instrument. Stay tuned!

Sizes

There are 4 major sizes in each ukulele which are concert, tenor, baritone, and soprano. You may here the sopranissimo from other musical instrument players.

This is the most popular instrument that you can see on the current market although the size is smaller than soprano (about 16 inches = 40cm).

However, the soprano is the most conventional size which has 20 inches (= 51cm). And you can enjoy the real sound of a ukulele from this type.

The concert has 23 inches (=58cm) which have a bigger body, a longer neck, and more room as well. The tenor, on the one hand, has 26 inches (=66cm) with a deeper sound like a classic guitar. Most gurus and well-known players prefer using this type because of the high-quality sound.

The baritone has the largest size which is 30 inches (=76cm). Many people indicate that this type has a deeper tone and sound like a classical nylon stringed guitar.

Woods

After considering the size, you need to mind their materials. Fortunately, most ukuleles are made from woods. However, there are bunches of woods that you cannot distinguish such as monkeypod, mahogany, mango, koa, rosewood, cedar, acacia, etc.

Koa comes from Hawaii which is a beautiful grain and a lukewarm sound. The price for this material in each ukulele is more expensive than others.

Mahogany is less expensive than Koa but it has a softer sound than Koa wood. However, these materials are not popular than spruce. Spruce is used on a lower end ukuleles.

Brands

To be honest, you are the only one to help you with this part. Nowadays, there are tons of decent quality brands on the market.

Some most popular brands you can choose from such as Kala, Mahalo, Lanikai, Pono, Kamaka, Luna, Kanilea, Pono, Kanilea, etc. These brands also provide great starter kits as well.

Looks

Why should you consider this factor? Because this is the first point you will love a ukulele in the first place. Some instruments have incredible visual appeal than others. See the wood type, the fit, the finish, and the accents.

Then, you should pay attention to the quality of the construction and materials. If you are not sure something on an instrument, then you should take note and ask questions. Be sure you have to pick the right materials which are solid woods or laminate woods as well.

Please carry in mind that solid woo opens up over time and blooms while laminate wood retains the similar. If you buy the instrument for learning, you will need to select the one without caring much about the beautiful design to save your bucks.

Sound and tone

It is extremely important to check the sound of an instrument. In my opinion, this is the main factor to check it carefully. A tone is another term that you should not miss out. If you like the sound of a ukulele, then the sound is good enough.

Price

I am sure that most players pay attention to the price for purchasing an instrument like a ukulele. Before checking the price tag, look at your budget first. If your budget allows you to buy an expensive instrument, then you should go for it. If not, estimate the price range from your wallet.

I know that it is not easy to consider the right price point for you, but you should do this homework yourself. Pick a pen and a note first. Then, draw two lines or a table to add information about your income, your budget and other things which are related to your income.

After that, go to every shop to see the price and access some online shops to compare the price between them.

Your purpose

Are you a new player or are you an experienced one?

A novice should select an instrument that is not expensive or much more beautiful because you have to practice it regularly. In other words, the quality will be decreased.

A guru will check the sound and tone first before making a final decision.

For me, I will choose an average price point to learn until I can play it well. Then, I will pick a better ukulele.
